Smothered Hamburger Steak
This Smothered Hamburger Steak recipe creates a hearty and satisfying dinner in one pan, for easy cleanup.
Ingredients:
- 2 lbs ground beef (any minced meat can be substituted)
- 1 yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 16 oz mushrooms (mix of cremini and shiitake, or just white)
- 2 cups beef broth, divided (can use fat-free low sodium)
- 2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 6 Tablespoons butter
- 4 scallions, sliced (white and green sections)
- Salt and pepper to taste (or substitute Cajun spice)
- Large skillet
- Divide the ground meat into 6 equal-sized patties and season each side liberally with salt and pepper
- Melt 2 Tablespoons of butter in the skillet over medium heat
- Add the onion and mushrooms, cooking until browned
- Remove from the skillet and set aside
- In the same skillet, add 2 more Tablespoons of butter and sear the beef patties for about 3 minutes on each side, or until the internal temperature reaches 120 F
- Remove patties and set aside
- Add the remaining 2 Tablespoons of butter to the skillet
- Stir in 1 1/2 cups of beef broth and bring to a simmer
- Whisk in the flour until smooth and cook until the gravy thickens
- If necessary, thin the gravy with the remaining 1/2 cup of broth
- Return the beef patties, mushrooms, and onions to the skillet
- Season with additional salt and pepper to taste
- Cook until the patties reach your desired doneness
- Garnish with sliced scallions and serve
