A hijacked supertanker with two British crew members was being taken to a Somali port this afternoon after pirates seized their biggest vessel yet off the African coast.

Acts of piracy in the shipping lanes of the Arabian Sea have become increasingly violent and commonplace in recent months, but this is the first time hijackers have seized an oil tanker.

The 1,000 ft-long Sirius Star was seized on Saturday around 450 nautical miles from Mombasa on the Kenyan coast. The supertanker, which can hold up to two million barrels of crude oil, is owned by Aramco, a Saudi company, but was sailing under a Liberian flag.

The Foreign Office confirmed that two of those on board were British but could not give any details of their role on the ship.

Somalia is pretty much anarchy. But you'd think that a Saudi Oil Tanker with a hundred million dollars of oil would throw a few million into a security investment.

Where are the ninjas when you need em?

Well they're already in an epic war with the pirates, but they have a treaty that says that neither of them will encroach on each other's crime ventures. Do you ever see a pirate trying to steal a ninja's gold?

Pirates ask for 10 Million Dollar Ransom

Sirius-Star-ship-001.jpg

Pirates are expected to a record ransom of more than $10million for the release of the Saudi oil supertanker hijacked off the Kenyan coast, as the spate of hijackings gathered pace with two more ships seized today.

Negotiations over the Sirius Star, packed with two million barrels of crude oil worth $100million (£67m) - enough to supply the whole of France for a day - were said still not to have opened formally.

But officials involved in the release of previous ships claimed that 'electronic monitoring' showed the Somali pirates 'were talking' of at least $10million (£6.7m).

Whole story here.

A .50 cal rifle costs less then $9000. 100 round 9mm smg's cost a tenth of that per person. Sidearms are cheaper by another factor three. How hard is it to arm people when you are sending them to places where it's pretty likely you are going to bump into people with ak47's that arent afraid to use them if the profit is higher then the cost of their ammo?

A deck mounted machinegun is going to be worth it's wheight in gold even if you only use it as scarecrow.
