DETROIT -- Japanese automaker Toyota announced a recall this week involving 1.9 million RAV4 SUVs that have issues with the battery. According to the Associated Press, the recall impacts certain RAV4s from the model years 2013 through 2018.

The issue involves batteries that can move during forceful turns and potentially catch fire. Toyota says that some of the replacement batteries installed in the SUVs are smaller than others and in those cases, if the hold-down clamp isn’t tightened properly the battery can move. If that happens, the positive terminal can make contact with the clamp and cause a short circuit, which can lead to a fire.

Toyota declined to comment on whether or not it was aware of the issue causing any fires, crashes or injuries, the AP reports.

The company is currently preparing a fix for the problem and is expected to notify impacted customers via letter by late December. Once the fix is ready, dealerships will replace the hold-down clamp, battery tray and positive terminal cover.

RAV4 owners who wish to see if their vehicle is part of the recall can visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall website and enter their vehicle identification number.
