winrar needed?

Hi,

some of the links on this site are to .rar files. do i need to download winrar to extract these? ive been able to extract .zip files fine, but i cant extract the .rar.

WinRar will be able to do it.
So will 7zip.

I prefer 7zip because it reminds me of 1984 (and because it handles every single archive type I've ever seen, works on every OS, and has a c00l name).

I'm sure there are other programs as well.

is open source a safe utility to use? what does open source mean?


EDIT: and since i have windows 7 (which is 64 bit?) should i download the .msi, x64 file?

Yes, that's the site.

Open source means anyone can access the source code (IE, precompiled version) of the program.
Don't get it, it won't be compiled (won't have an EXE)... you'd need a compiler.
