The University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Wausau, Wis., company have come up with a 37-inch, bullet and bomb-proof Humvee tire based on a polymeric web so cool looking there's no need for hub caps.

Resilient Technologies and Wisconsin-Madison's Polymer Engineering Center are creating a "non-pneumatic tire" (no air required) that will support the weight of add-on armor, survive an IED attack, and still make a 50 mph getaway. It's basically a round honeycomb wrapped with a thick, black tread.

The military wants an alternative to the current Humvee "run flat" tires, which despite the name, still need a minimal amount of air pressure to roll and can leave troops stranded after being shot or blown out.

There are other ways to stop cars. A blown out tire would make the car much more uncontrollable, and if the criminal continues to drive, he could injure or kill someone.

They are huge, don't perform as well as normal tires, and are likely more expensive.

It's funny with all the technoligical knowledge we have in this day and age it took this long to come up with a bullet proof tire.

I assume the ride would be incredibly rough, and with a top speed of 50mph you better keep your eye on the speedo on the highway or you might accidentally shatter the thing

Actually I am pretty sure it will be able to handle speeds of 90+ mph. The military is funny, they look for design bids like this example of the LMTV that they currently use. They asked for a vehicle that could drive up a 60 degree slope towing 10,000 pounds at 10 MPH. They then look for who can deliver this need, winner prototype gets the contract. Well the current LMTV is fast, can't tell you how fast (since they don't disclose the actual top speed of anything in the military) but I have towed 1000 gallons of water up a mountain in hawaii with 3 pallets of ammo and batteries in the rear at some decent speeds. I bet the design bid for the bulletproof tires was the same.

They look pretty cool tho But I can't see them going over a few of the speedbumps we got in sweden Go fast on those a few times and the car is just crap afterwards.

On the speedbumps: I saw a real horror piece outside a school in the city of Lund last summer. They have these like constuction-site-bulks in wich are placed in the asfalt. I just could not resist taking a closer look on them and there where marks in them(and that is some hard steel in those), and paint from a red car.
I guess he must have come either to fast or he missed the ledges at the sides to drive on. But his undercarriage must have been pretty much gone after that
