Advanced Micro Devices has launched a reorganization that will see the chipmaker's microprocessor and graphics units merged into a single group.

The products group--one of four new groups announced Wednesday--will be headed by graphics chip executive Rick Bergman, who joined AMD after its $5.4 billion acquisition of graphics chip company ATI in 2006. The chipmaker said the other three groups would focus on technology, marketing, and customers.

"The next generation of innovation in the computing industry will be grounded in the fusion of microprocessor and graphics technologies," AMD CEO Dirk Meyer said in a statement. "With these changes, we are putting the right organization in place to help enable the future of computing."

I think nVidia already had this idea a while ago, but then Intel threatened them because it would obviously cause Intel to lose profits/sales.

I wonder how this is going to affect the market of business vs entertainment computers. The Processing of gaming uses both the CPU and GPU, whereas businesses only use the CPU for most environments. Will the high end prices only be required for gaming?

Good jon AMD coming up with a new idea for development.

...

A year after Nvidia put out their merged GPU/CPU series. You can get an Nvidia Tesla with the power of roughly 250 times the average desktop for just $9000. Scale that down to gaming level and you get a <$200 rig.

This can either be a good or a bad thing.

It depends on who is making the drivers, if it is ATi, then AMD get's screwed:(

I know, I'm just saying that if ATi is the one making the drivers for that new type of cpu, then they are screwed.

ATi is really bad at maintaining their drivers:p

So basically the two companies that don't make as good of stuff plan on making a combined not very good thing for you to buy so that you can get pissed off and have it not work very good?

Varine, check your sources. The latest Phenom core actually beats all of the latest Intels, and the 4800 series kicks ass.

Seriously, think before bashing.

ATI doesn't keep up with their drivers. Both of the companies are known for making generally lower quality and cheaper parts that run hotter and often are larger than Intel and Nvidia. Probably because they do.

Cheaper, yes. Lower quality? Not in any of my experiences.

Not to me either, but the driver part of ATi is actually true. They are really lazy when it comes to drivers:( That have caused me a lot of troubles before:(

But I sure think that this will be a good thing:thup:

All of the ones I've used run way hotter than Intel and clock slower, not really noticeable since they're running fast enough to process everything I do though.

Hmm, how do I change my signature?
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
Signatures can be edit in your account profile. As for the old stuffs, I'm thinking it's because Blizzard is now under Microsoft, and because of Microsoft Xbox going the way it is, it's dreadful.

@tom_mai78101 I must be blind. If I go on my profile I don't see any area to edit the signature; If I go to account details (settings) I don't see any signature area either.

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
