Most of us know that tornadoes are unpredictable, uncontrollable, and dangerous. But a Canadian engineer thinks they could be the future of electricity generation. He wants to make electricity from artificial tornadoes.

Louis Michaud, a retired petroleum engineer in Sarnia, Ontario, plans to use the waste heat from conventional power plants to create an "atmospheric vortex engine" - a small, controlled tornado that would drive turbines and generate electricity. "I'm confident that we could control these things," he says. Michaud also thinks solar powered tornados generated using the sun's heat could also work.

His latest design is a circular wall 200 meters across and 100 meters high without a roof. Air carrying the waste heat would be blown in from vents on the sides, spinning around the walls into a vortex that becomes just like a real tornado. Once started, the vortex would draw in more hot air from vents in the wall, pulling it past turbines and generating electricity.

Michaud calculates that a vortex engine of this size would create a tornado about 50 meters in diameter and generate between 50 and 500 MW of electricity.

This is what I came up after reading the article...
"...Artificial Tornadoes vs Natural Tornadoes. Who will take the chamionship home? The Home team or the Away team? I'm Mark Kennings, ESPN Sports, back to you, TheHelper. Stay tuned."

I can't translate well.:(

This is sort of a questionable technology, but it does have it's Pros. I mean, really what else are you going to do with the heat produced in your toaster?

No..just no...We already have enough uncontrollable sh** in the world..we don't need people making more.

little tornadoes would be awesome though, because of their ability to gain momentum and continue going. Once you could start a mini, controlled tornado, inside a huge cylinder, it would then continue spinning because of momentum and would suck it's power source, which would be excess heat. A large startup energy would be needed probably, but then, bam, your tornado would probably spin indefinately as long as conditions could be regulated. Besides, you can't control nuclear power plants that blow up and irradiate towns within a few hundred mile radius, why would a little tornado be worse then that? at least it wouldn't blow up, it would just go free for a few miles and disintegrate. Anyways, I think we are talking very little tornadoes here. Cool ideas.

Don't forget WoW

Though I do love WoW, I aggree. Unfortunately you don't see level 70 shamen running around in the real world blowing up things. Now THAT would be a disaster. But soooo cool. XD

Religion - I don't think I need to explain this.

Genes - We have no control, and people are stereotypical about these. It gives the gender, phenotype (physical characteristics) and even gives advantage to or from certain diseases.

Discrimination - Something we can't control, but it happens all the time.

Now, lol why?

Tornadoes grow in size when it reaches outside conditions..

I guess being sucked into a swirling vortex of doom is better than dying of radiation.

Also it's entertaining to watch =P

That is why they would be better off creating a smaller minimature-sized dust devils. Better than tornadoes, as it lacks the power it needs to destroy, wind to pick things up except for dusts, and small pebbles, and other factors not equal to tornadoes.

How come you're so into recipes lately? Never saw this much interest in this topic in the old days of TH.net

Hmm, how do I change my signature?
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
Signatures can be edit in your account profile. As for the old stuffs, I'm thinking it's because Blizzard is now under Microsoft, and because of Microsoft Xbox going the way it is, it's dreadful.

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
