I recommend grabbing a tool to make levels/maps for a finished, well-established game, and start working. Creating melee maps for Warcraft III isn't bad start at all, but also try designing something three-dimensional, like levels for some first-person shooter. I recall that Quake III Arena has a free level editor and I am sure many others have too.

You can also learn some scripting languages, for example Lua or Python. You can learn Lua in practice by developing add-ons for WoW.

Even other than that, there are so many things that are going to be useful - you can get into creative writing, drawing, narration...

If you're new to the whole game design industry, it's a good idea to start out with basic programs that require no programming knowledge, such as Game Maker.

Using level editors from games can also be a good idea, things like Map Editors or built-in editors for puzzle games :).

As far as languages go, alot of languages can be good, but C/C++ is by far the most popular language used by game developers these days, so I'd recommend learning that for sure :).

Good luck with everything, hope this helps!

I'm actually thinking about going into the same field. I would like to be in game design just not 100% sure what part of it. Good luck man.

So I've already learned basic C++, Javascript, and HTML. I plan to learn the advanced parts of C++ and possibly JASS (WC3 programming language) Do you guys think knowing JASS would help me at all with getting into that type of career?

And I'm currently working my 1st huge WC map. Is that just for a learning experience type of help or would it be something I present to them in some form?

And I'm also a great drawer, mostly with pencil, but hey based on what you said.. I'm on a pretty good road towards that field. And I'm only a Sophomore :p

I still wonder if it's worth trying to get in that career professionally. There are so many, for a lack of better words: "Super-nerds" and highly intelligent and hardworking Asian people out there that develop all of the big games. Is it worth competing against some people?

No, if anything it will make it harder for you to learn C++ unless you already know it.

So if I were to continue with my WC maps and I didn't have to learn JASS but I plan to learn C++ you think it would be better to just learn C++? I've heard knowing C++ makes learning JASS a lot easier also.

C++ is from C , so learning C will give you an introduction to all the other languages. I learned JASS and PHP easy since it was like C.

Orc_Tamer is right.
C is probably the language you want to learn first. Shouldn't be too hard to learn C++ after that.
And, after you learn that, just about any language should be piece of a cake for you (except maybe assembly which you luckily don't need when it comes to game development).

It really depends on what engine you are going to use. Though, your best bet would be learning C, and then C++, or going right to C++.

Some engines don't have Level editors, and stuff must be spawned in the scripting. However, some engines, such as Lawmaker, have really advanced level editors ( Provided you have loaded the level with models ( You have to make those )).

I can tell you, if you snag a job as a level designer, you will have LOADS of fun. I've done it before, tons of fun.

How come you're so into recipes lately? Never saw this much interest in this topic in the old days of TH.net

Hmm, how do I change my signature?
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
Signatures can be edit in your account profile. As for the old stuffs, I'm thinking it's because Blizzard is now under Microsoft, and because of Microsoft Xbox going the way it is, it's dreadful.

I am not big on the recipes I am just promoting them - I use the site as a practice place promoting stuff

@tom_mai78101 I must be blind. If I go on my profile I don't see any area to edit the signature; If I go to account details (settings) I don't see any signature area either.

You can get there if you click the bell icon (alerts) and choose preferences from the bottom, signature will be in the menu on the left there https://www.thehelper.net/account/preferences

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
