Report Many Parents Believe that Letting Young Children Taste Alcohol Discourages Later Use, Study Finds

My parents had the same view, and it discouraged me for a while. Starting university means that I drink a lot, but I didn't drink as much when I was underage. I can't say if the fact that I tasted it early was what discouraged me or if I just didn't care about it.

I guess the term "Children" should be defined here. I'd say around 13-15 years old sounds reasonable for children to try alcohol :p

cocaine/estacy - no.

@tom - if you give them a cocktail that tastes good (1%), that defeats the purpose of giving them something like beer, that tastes bad, or better yet, grappa (50%) that they won't even try to drink after they smell it

I thought cocktails with 1% or less alcohol works well for 15 to 17 years olds. But, pretty much, yeah! They won't even want to taste our brand, Kaoliang.

at 1% you won't taste it or feel it at all (until you get to the point of drinking gallons..) which isn't what you want to encourage (look, you had 5 drinks and aren't even buzzed yet)
 
Nyph, how do you figure cigarettes are more addictive than alcohol? You quit smoking and you get irritable, anxious and maybe a lil' sick feeling. You quit drinking after the wrong binge and you die because your body is so used to it that your internal organs can't function without it. Lot easier to quit smoking and be a bitch for three days than to quit drinking (when you've been drinking to the extent that smokers smoke) and end up in the hospital 'cuz your body literally can't be without it. Or that's how I see it, anyway.

I mean, I hear you, but at the same time that's when me an' all my friends started drinking, was 8th grade. I'd tried a sip of my dad's beer twice and hated it, but once I was convinced to actually drink a whole beer and felt the buzz for the first time, it was game over. I was thinkin' people were talkin' more about ages 6-8, when [my] parents gave the first drink. At 13-15... they might already like it by then.

Nicotine has a higher physical dependance than alcohol. You have to have way more alcohol to get bad withdrawal symptoms than nicotine to get physical dependance. i.e. cravings are much stronger for nicotine.
 
The second one was a Pyramid, so no, it was not good.

    Yeah Tom, me too sorry for your loss buddy my mom told me she finds out her olds friend died from Google searching them. She had not talked to one of her old friends in a year and found out she died from Google. Also another one in the same session. RIP all of them my sincere condolences Tom

    We have some elderly guests that regularly come hang out at the bar at the end of the night, and every once in a while we don't see someone for a few weeks and then someone shows up with their obituary.

There was one guy named Tom that came in like every night and would sit by himself and get a bunch of soup and a glass of wine. idk why but he LOVED our fucking soup, like he would order a fucking quart of it at a time and would always get so sad when we stop doing it for the summer.

    He was just such a sweet old man, we had two servers pregnant and they held a baby shower together, he was soooooo fucking excited to get to see a baby. Unfortunately he died a month or so before they were born

    So I decided to Google some people that I had not seen or heard from in a while and sure enough one of my old best friends, we had a falling out years ago but whatever, find out he died of Pancreatic Cancer in January. I have also lost a few of my closer acquaintances from growing up the last year. Getting old - people die - I kinda thought it was going to be this way a few years ago....
