Ram issues

my pc's a Gateway E series.
But for some reason it has 256 ram. I actually have 512 with four ram slots.
I thought the ram may be dead, but when I switch a set to the other slots it recognizes as, you guessed it 256 ram!
But when I mix and match it makes a nagging beep noise from the system board.
When I pull 2 of them out, it makes a nagging beep noise as well.
What's with my pc?
is it the ram slot?
or is it my ram?
or what...?
oh and by the way i will take a picture of it. I've never seen it before..

The memory probably comes in pairs, and it's most likely that either the memory is dead or the motherboard can no longer recognize the pair on that socket. Other than that if you're using some archaic Operating system that can't recognize 512mb of ram is the case xD

Yes, they can not work if not paired up. Best thing you can do is to get some ram from a friends computer and test it in ^^
