Gaming Why the Music Industry Hates Guitar Hero

Nobody expected the number-one-with-a-bullet rise of the music videogame—least of all the music industry. Armed with little more than crappy graphics, plastic guitars, and epic hooks, play-along titles like Guitar Hero and Rock Band have become an industry in their own right, raking in more than $2.3 billion over the past three years. Album sales fell 19 percent this past holiday season, but the thrill isn't gone—it just moved to a different platform.

The success of these games is good news for the music biz. They're breathing new life into old bands (Weezer, anyone?) and helping popularize new ones. They're even becoming a significant distribution outlet for new releases. So the record labels ought to be ecstatic, right? Nope. They're whining over licensing fees.

"The amount being paid to the music industry, even though [these] games are entirely dependent on the content we own and control, is far too small," Warner Music Group CEO Edgar Bronfman told analysts last summer. The money Warner receives for the use of its songs is "paltry," he said, and if the gamemakers don't pony up more cash, "we will not license to those games." In response, Rock Band publisher MTV Games is now boycotting Warner artists, according to a source close to the negotiations.

This is a fight no one can win. Putting the brakes on music gaming would hurt everyone in the ailing music industry. Instead of demanding greater profit participation, Warner should be angling for creative participation. Thirty years ago, Hollywood took a similar threat—the VCR—and turned it into a new source of revenue, building customer loyalty in the process. The music industry could use new games the same way—but its track record suggests that it won't.

I can sort of see where he's coming from; it does seem paticularly sneaky the way the game devs paid for it (by licensing it as background music).
But having said that, Aerosmith made more from Guitar Hero: Aerosmith than any of their albums. And it's the artist's music at the end of the day. This just shows the greed of the dinosaurs that are the music labels.

I agree, it is a bit sneaky, but if you think about it, the music played IS background music! You COULD play Guitar Hero without the songs (try muting it) and get along fine. The music is just added to help "enhance" the game ;)

WMG is always so greedy. Try looking up any of their music on Youtube. You won't find it anymore.

It's so greedy for artists actually wanting to make a living. Seriously, I think all music should be free.
[/sarcasm]

However, considering how many retired artists are getting royalties off of this, I think they don't need the money. New bands do :(

When are we going to see violin hero? lol

I know for a fact that the bands in Rock Band are getting massive amounts of advertisement from Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Take any of the major songs from either game and go to youtube and type it in, and then look at the comments. You'll see lots of "I am good at this song on GH" or "I can 5star this song" comments.

I'm sure lots of albums are sold because of being on rock band or guitar hero, too. A lot of the older bands on these games should be thankful they are, gets their image revamped.

QFT. Though I do think the licensing for the actual music as 'background music' is completely retarded. I feel most of the money should be going to the artists, and little to the game developers. Their contribution to the game, was to make a rip-off of Dance Dance Revolution, with different controls (essentially).

Please tell me you're being sarcastic. The music IS the game, and believe me, you won't get anyone who will play the game if it doesn't have "background music". If you disagree, then watch this episode of South Park: http://www.southparkstudios.com/episodes/127947

It's completely different for something like Warcraft III, or Left 4 Dead, where the game can be played for fun, even without background music.

I agree somewhat, they should give a bit more royalty to the music companies than just "Background music". But at least they're not just making covers, calling it covers, and then not paying any royalty. ;)

Heh. Background music. That's clever.

On a small side note, I once had a nightmare where undead were banging on the windows and nobody else in the house cared. They were standing around the TV playing Xylophone Hero! Looking back on that nightmare, I must have been quite insane.

It's their fault for agreeing to the terms.
It's like they said "He, we'll let you use our music" while thinking "This game isn't gonna sell much." Now that it is, they're getting jealous and greedy.

I'm gonna have to admit to buying an album or two based on what I first heard in Guitar Hero :)

y'know...

Rock Band/Guitar hero have a lot in common with the Apple iPod when you think about it... both something simple that started off inventive and small. Now you can buy several different accessories to enhance your product, variants of the beginning product, and both have fans saying it's the best invention since sliced bread.

Sounds like someone finally picked up on Nintendo's marketing ploy and put it to better use :D

anyway... although a sneaky move on the gamer's part, i think it's better for the artist. My favorite Band, The Offspring, is finally getting some acknowledgment since Smash. I would have never listened to A7X, Slipknot, Motley Crue, Beck, or a bunch of other bands had it not been for RB/GH.

not to mention if they get rid of this, what am i gonna do when i get drunk?

Drunken Rock Band, oh so fun.

I'm going to have to agree with you as well, too. There are quite a few bands I would have never listened to had it not been for GH/RB, like Muse for example. I like them now, but I heard them playing Guitar Hero once and checked em' out.

Eh, the greed of the music executives... The artists benefit, the consumers benefit, but the money doesn't go into their pockets, so it isn't all right.

But Triangle Hero is the best, I tell you.
