BANGKOK (AP) - For the first time, an experimental vaccine has prevented infection with the AIDS virus, a watershed event in the deadly epidemic and a surprising result. Recent failures led many scientists to think such a vaccine might never be possible.

The World Health Organization and the U.N. agency UNAIDS said the results "instilled new hope" in the field of HIV vaccine research.

The vaccine - a combination of two previously unsuccessful vaccines - cut the risk of becoming infected with HIV by more than 31 percent in the world's largest AIDS vaccine trial of more than 16,000 volunteers in Thailand, researchers announced Thursday in Bangkok.

Even though the benefit is modest, "it's the first evidence that we could have a safe and effective preventive vaccine," Col. Jerome Kim told The Associated Press. He helped lead the study for the U.S. Army, which sponsored it with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

I'm always worried that one day some scientist will create a vaccine to cure HIV/AIDS/Cancer but has deadly side effects such as turning into a Zombie or... just dieing :p

They actually say condoms don't necessarily stop the transmission of HIV. So it's good they finally got a breakthrough. :)

Yea cuz HIV is the only/main reason to wear a condom.

I personally use them primarily because of the whole pregnancy thing.

Thats the first thing I thought of too, hahahaha.

Not that I dont use condoms, but concerning the pregnacy thing, I use them on top of other anti-conception. When Im using a condom, it will mainly be to ban the iebiegibies. For the actual baby-banning, my girlfriend has the pill.

HIV mutates way too rapidly for them to find a cure with current medical science, unfortunately.

There are some horrific articles of AIDS survivors, they're not cured, HIV has destroyed their immune systems (hence AIDS) and they're kept alive on medication, but could go at any minute.

Basically though, yes, condoms are still the best way to go, HIV is still pretty much a death sentence (not to mention all the other side effects of unprotected sex, as sqrage may have mentioned).
