You don't.
At least, I don't know of a way. I think it's part of the forum software.
It could possibly be a browser issue, but I would tend to think not.

In theory....
But how necessary is that?

Its like that so you can view links without leaving the forum etc.

VBulletin creators did that on purpose

If you are using Internet Explorer hold down the alt key when you click. There is something similar for Firefox and other browsers but that is how you do it in Explorer. Hope this helps.

Alt+shift seems to work on firefox.. While just shift will open in a new window rather than a tab.

99% of the solutions given in this thread are ways to open a link in a new window (or tab). The OP asked to prevent it.

At least in Firefox, the new window/tab behavior (aka override the target attribute or popups) can be customized through various extensions (such as Tab Mix Plus) or about:config .

Well as I posted above, alt+shift and click will open in the same window, ctrl and click or just middle click will open in a new tab while keeping the current tab active, just shift and click will open in an entirely new window, alt click seems to download the page, while just click on the link opens a new tab and makes it the active one.

This applies to standard firefox without any add-ons. If they don't work for you then, maybe it's just my settings.. :p
