what is a generally good map size in megabytes? by good i mean relatively fast to download (not to the point of DotA where no one is allowed to dl)

1 kb for uber fast downloads.

Any size is good to about 6 mbs, but if you optimize it, it won't really matter. (since optimizing makes it smaller)

umm.. limit of maps in battle.net is 4 mbs <_<

How do i optimize, how do i see the size of my map, and how much will optimizing decrease the size?

id say 1mb or less.

You shouldn't need to worry about download speeds, as long as you don't have huge import files.

The amount saved by optimizing depends on your map and what you have in it.

I'd say less than 1mb is about the largest map size you should aim for. Anything more would be annoying

Models don't get compressed much more after being in the w3x; so I'm afraid that you're fucked.

Remember, MDL (and I believe mdx too, haven't tested) and BLP compress alot inside the w3x. This means that the total import size is often wrong; check the actual file size of the map after importing imports.
