-=Culminating Project for Data Management=-
-=[Survey]=-

The Purpose:
First of all, I want you to understand that this is all for a final in my data management course. For this I need to do the following:
  • design and carry out a culminating investigation that requires the integration and application of the knowledge and skills related to the expectations of the course
  • communicate the findings of a culminating investigation and provide constructive critiques of the investigations of others

Collecting Data:
To collect data, I am required to conduct a survey that utilizes an appropriate sampling technique. All data must be from a primary source, and properly cited.

Research Question:
Okay, so this is what I need from all of you. I appreciate and thank all of you for your help in advance.

"Is the quality of a program (in this case: a map) effected by the number of years of programming experience that the author has?"

I know the answer may seem obvious, but that is not the point of the investigation.

The Form:
I would be very grateful if you could fill in this form, (Copy and paste, if you like)

Entry

Map Name: ("My Epic RPG")
Language: (GUI/vJASS/cJASS... etc.)
Quality: (Out of 100)
Experience: (4 years of programming)
Known Languages: (7 Languages. (Java, C#, C++, VB...))

Quality is subjective, meaning it is your opinion. Be honest please.

Thank you all once again for your contribution.
Anyone who posts below will receive reputation. (Or twice and so on if you post twice.)

EDIT: You do not need to fill in the entire form. You may comment on other people's maps as well.

Progress So Far:

Names in red have had reputation added.
Names in blue still require more reputation. (Restricted by forum constraints.)

Bump. You guys can post about old maps you've made. Perhaps the first one you ever did? All data is welcome.

Are we allowed to post maps made by other persons? Like, a map created by someone else that we have played.

You may: Just provide as much information as you can. Thanks!

You should have quality split up into a few categories, such as how unique the idea behind the map was, how fun the map was, what the replay value of the map was, ... etc.

I strongly believe that a lot of mappers will pay less attention to how fun a map is when they've been working on the map/coding for a longer period of time. Instead, the coding community draws them in with their talk of efficiency.

I know for a while I completely stopped thinking about how much fun the map was.

Here is the path I took, with most of the major maps I worked on listed.

Map Name: Minotaur's Labyrinth
Language: Little to no GUI
Quality: 30 (Never released due to trigger complication).
Experience: N/A
Known Languages: N/A

Map Name: Fortress Defense
Language: Some GUI
Quality: 60 (I had few triggers, and I was much more experienced with the object editor, so I decided to make a game based almost entirely on this. It was a ton of fun, even if it was not very balanced).
Experience: GUI (approx. 2 months)
Known Languages: N/A

Map Name: Dynamite TD
Language: GUI
Quality: 15 (This map became ridiculously balanced, and not fun).
Experience: GUI (approx. 1 year)
Known Languages: N/A

Map Name: Forest CTF (Version 1)
Language: GUI, some JASS
Quality: 70 (I took map design back to the drawing board)
Experience: GUI (approx. 18 months), JASS Spellmaking (approx. 3 months)
Known Languages: N/A

Map Name: Forest CTF (Version 2)
Language: vJASS
Quality: 80 (I recoded everything, and decided to customize everything)
Experience: GUI (approx. 2 years months), JASS (approx. 8 months), vJASS (approx. 2 months)
Known Languages: Some Python, some Perl

uh, ok

Map Name: War RPG
Language: little to no GUI
Quality: 5 out of 100 (yeeaaaa. Terrible tool tips, unbalanced heroes, only modded warcraft 3 abilities, but was fun to mass armies and see a hero mow down the whole army)
Experience: a few months of world editor (2007 or maybe ever 2006)
Known Languages: none!!!!

Map Name: Farm RPG
Language: a little GUI
Quality: 10 out of 100 (never made past 2nd boss, unbalanced heroes, till very little triggering, but fun cause I was making stuff)
Experience: a few more months (2007 or early 2008)
Known Languages: none!!!!

Map Name: 7 Sins RPG
Language: GUI
Quality: 20 and rising out of 100 (don't even have the first boss in yet DX but I'm still working on it)
Experience: 1 year of World Editor Triggers. Like 3 years of editor (late 2008 to now)
Known Languages: none!!!!

I think I'm doing this right:

Map Name: Strife Reborn
Language: Mainly GUI, with small amounts of JASS.
Quality: 15. This was actually a map I revived, and attempted to fix. Due to all the drama over the map that caused it to die, and the trigger quality, it wasn't very good.
Experience: 3 Years experience with the World Editor, but nothing serious until a year ago.
Known Languages: vJASS, and XHTML (and CSS) if you count 'em.

Map Name: Battle for Midcryu (working title, based off of a trilogy of books by Brent Weeks)
Language: vJASS/cJASS.
Quality: Pre-developement
Experience: Same as above.
Known Languages: Same as above, with a bit of knowledge of VB, Python, C#, Go, C++, PHP and JavaScript.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I did it right.
Might have gotten the point of this wrong... Still...

Okey, let's go with this;

Map I created a long time ago, it had its flaws and was simple GUI, but it was still enjoyable to play.

Map Name: Archers Mini Arena
Language: GUI
Quality: I'll give it a 85/100 for my effort and it is pretty fun to play, mostly did 1 on 1 with my brother, worked out fine, but also some 3 on 3 and stuff.
Experience: GUI (probably 1 year by then)
Known Languages: N/A

As I said, I created it a long while ago, so the GUI experience might be a little off, triggers weren't perfect, but it was fun, and that's the main idea behind a map, isn't it? :)

Map Name: Ogre Battle
Language: GUI, Jass leak removal
Quality: 10/100 unfinished, when finished/balanced/polished probably 70-80
Experience: 6 years off and on, since the release of WC3:FT
Known Languages: GUI
Status: I've restarted this map several times and put in hundreds of hours. I've always said when I finish this map I will be able to rest in peace. And like Blizzard I will never release it if it doesn't meet the high expectations I have envisioned.

Hmm, how do I change my signature?
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
Signatures can be edit in your account profile. As for the old stuffs, I'm thinking it's because Blizzard is now under Microsoft, and because of Microsoft Xbox going the way it is, it's dreadful.

I am not big on the recipes I am just promoting them - I use the site as a practice place promoting stuff

@tom_mai78101 I must be blind. If I go on my profile I don't see any area to edit the signature; If I go to account details (settings) I don't see any signature area either.

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
  • Ghan Ghan:
Heard Houston got hit pretty bad by storms last night. Hope all is well with TH.
