General Why Should We Study Zombie Attacks?

Last month, a group of mathematicians grabbed headlines with their mathematical model of the zombie apocalypse. But as one science journalist notes, such studies are more than amusing academic anecdotes; they can actually serve a very legitimate social interest.

Patrick J. Kiger, a journalist and blogger for the Science Channel, has been criticized for focusing on technologies in his column Is This a Good Idea? that currently exist only in the realm of speculative fiction. To answer those critics, Kiger looks at the recent study by mathematicians in Ottawa as to the best response to a zombie outbreak. What good, Kiger asks, is it to study a phenomenon that we know does not actually exist?

Kiger spends some time contemplating whether or not we might actually have to fear attacks from the flesh-eating undead, but ultimately, his point is that the possibility of a literal zombie attack is irrelevant to the value of such studies. Studying zombie attacks is valuable, he argues, precisely because they represent a level of crisis that we do not have any experience with, and our ability to logically respond to such a crisis:

Step 1: Drop your cocks and grab your socks
Step 2: Find shotguns
Step 3: Go to the nearest Wal-Mart
Step 4: ????
Step 5: Profit!

Actually its nearest Costco. Sure it may be hard to defend but its got EVERYTHING . IMO, Shotguns arent as good as flamethrowers or rocketlauchers. Maybe a hand grenade or a serious shot to the face

One of these days some one's going to try to wipe out people through something like this, and 90% of humans are going to be immune, and the other 10% are going to get slaughtered.

I have a feeling it's going to be the shotgun companies who try it, they currently would gain the most from a Zombie attack. :p

My father was on the force. He has very big experience with guns and he told me that the smallest pistol can be deadly. He also laughed at every shooter with the words "After the first shot you will be screaming with pain and you won't be able to aim let alone shoot" If zombies have a nerve system, they will be as such as vulnerable as humans to pain.

So if zombies are just dead people... are you kidding me ? I mean they die as well. Without substance after a couple of weeks the zombies might roar all they want: their musciles will be too weak to lift the weight of their flesh... I think that either there is some super secret weapon no one has told us about, or those dudes are spending their get laid time with RE4 and RE5

Yeah, sure. Waste millions of dollars on studying zombie attacks that cannot happen outside of video game reality instead of researching technology that actually matters.

There are lots of parasites and viruses that are known in the animal kingdom that can attack the brain and control it's victim and it so it can reproduce or protect it, what do you think the concept of the "T-Virus" is? It's just a human version of it. I think we should study more about those "controlling viruses" so they don't evolved by using us.

Just two examples of "Zombie" symptoms

How come you're so into recipes lately? Never saw this much interest in this topic in the old days of TH.net

Hmm, how do I change my signature?
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
Signatures can be edit in your account profile. As for the old stuffs, I'm thinking it's because Blizzard is now under Microsoft, and because of Microsoft Xbox going the way it is, it's dreadful.

I am not big on the recipes I am just promoting them - I use the site as a practice place promoting stuff

@tom_mai78101 I must be blind. If I go on my profile I don't see any area to edit the signature; If I go to account details (settings) I don't see any signature area either.
  • The Helper The Helper:
You can get there if you click the bell icon (alerts) and choose preferences from the bottom, signature will be in the menu on the left there https://www.thehelper.net/account/preferences

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
