NEW YORK (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp launched Windows 7 on Thursday in its most important release for more than a decade, aiming to win back customers after the disappointing Vista and strengthen its grip on the PC market.

The world's largest software company, which powers more than 90 percent of personal computers, has received good reviews for the new operating system, which it hopes will grab back the impetus in new technology from rivals Apple Inc and Google Inc.

"It's the first really significant release of Windows in a decade," analyst Brendan Barnicle of Pacific Crest Securities told Reuters Television. "Given the missteps around Vista, people really questioned Microsoft's relevancy in the technology space. So this is a critical first step for Microsoft regaining that credibility."

The new system -- which is faster, less cluttered and has new touch-screen features -- comes almost three years after the launch of Vista, whose complexity frustrated many home users and turned off business customers.

Just another reinvention of the wheel imho, where they move stuff around where nobody can ever find it. I never even upgraded to Vista.

Meh. I'm done with Windows. Too many viruses and secruity issues, and the lack-of-speed.
The 7 beta was pretty cool, but unless they do something about viruses, I won't be using 7.
Ubuntu/Mac for me.

I bought Vista just to get 7 for free. :)
Microsoft says it'll be delivered in 10-15 days. Long delivery times FTL. :(

How is Vista Complex? I'm using Vista and XP, and other than the slower performance, I prefer Vista over XP. They have the searchbar, easier way to switch desktop backgrounds, a better add/remove programs, better network connection interfaces, more intuitive organization of files, intelligent file copy/cut/movement, smarter searching... etc.

The reorganizations have been needed for a long time. I think the real reason companies aren't willing to switch are because of the bad publicity, Microsoft giving into the bad publicity to release a new OS, User Account Control, and the "performance issues".

One of the few things I've seen from Win 7 is pinning applications to the start bar, and it's one of the features I'm looking forward to (along with the performance increases).

Is there any actual advantages to getting Windows 7 compared to XP?

I think they're talking about the different versions of Vista. But I think Win 7 has as many versions ... so I'm not sure.

Depends. What do you use your XP for? If it's for gaming, new games might use feature available in the latest DirectX, which is incompatible with XP. (DirectX 10 was it?)

Yes, Vista wasn't worth the upgrade, but 7 is DEFINITELY worth it over XP.
XP will soon be redundant, 7 will crush Vista.

But that's just my opinion :D
