I remembered back the old days of the elementary school life, people called those who seemed unattractive "dork", or other similar terms.

At that time, the rate of being bullied was an all time high. Usually, taller and bulkier bullies punch and kick those with glasses and/or braces.

Those are things of the past. They are memories.

Now, I don't know if society accepts people with glasses are cool or attractive, and if they aren't, are they still being called "geek" and stuffs?

How do you feel about it, if the answer to the topic question is "Yes."?

Thank you for your time. :(

verbal abuse comes about because people are insecure. And people who are called "nerds" and "geeks" are usually smart enough to see that.

I consider myself a nerd, but I've only had people call me Nerd or Geek (to my face) a few times.

I'm offended by Geek, and I will correct any person who calls me one, but I haven't had anyone call me a dork, nor do I know what the other connotations to the word are.

Geek = Nerd - Intelligence
Dork = ?

Did little tom_mai78101 get made because I told him what Otaku was? lol

I'm not considered a nerd but a computer technician or "boss" since I'm a manager at work.

I've been called all three. My mother is especially fond of dork.

Doesn't upset me or anything. I really don't care about name calling (unless you call me Lyelye. Then I kill you.).

Heh I'd rather be called Lyelye like the strong base, the be called some lame ass noble gas. Would you rather be something that stars in movies and burns the shit out of things, or some floaty gas that doesn't explode and is reliable / anti-badass?

I get called all the stuff all the time ranging from silly "Jim" based nicknames, to hipster to faggela.

All of which are forms of endearment. <3

Workout nerd.

Everyone has been bullied, (Diagram 1-A) some people internalize it and take it way more personally and cry about it. Some individuals build this up over time and act as if some crime in their past has made them the way they are. Which if someones overtly conscious about such a thing, change should be tangible, so I don't really buy into the "I was bullied so I'm now the way I am." If this thread is in relation to Revolvers comment about Otaku, you kind of nailed yourself with that one. Like ... someone who stays indoors and just soaks up a ton of useless information, yet hasn't a solid grasp of what their claiming themselves to be? Foot in mouth. (1-B)

As for glasses, some look good, some don't (2-A). It really depends on the person and the glasses. Think of the people you know who wear glasses all the time, likely when they take them off it looks 'weird' (2-B) to you. I don't think there's much of a connection between braces/glasses and nerdism these days. Their both far too common. Laser eye surgery and contacts are available, so if glasses wearing is an issue, there are options. I suppose this would be primarily in economically privelaged area's, but in the not so gifted lands, their not cmomon place and said items (braces and glasses) may be a sign of wealth. D: Perhaps they should be considered a sign of technology and monetary attributes. The new bling - Elton John may very well be the forefather of ballin glasses. (2-C)

I don't let insults get to me. When I'm sincerely angry, I scare people. They tell me so. But you'd have to really screw up to get me angry.

Being called a geek or nerd means I'm smarter than who ever is calling me it. So I take it as a compliment.

Also, I AM a geek/nerd - I like magic the gathering, warhammer, dungeons and dragons.

I still look down on Anime dorks how ever. FOR SHAME!

Am I am a geek? Yes. Am I ever called a geek? No.
Why? Because I have longggg hair and ride sportbikes, far from the "geek" image... :rolleyes:

I'm fairly sure "dork" means someone who is dumb, dim witted.

I'm fairly sure dumb means mute.

I can't think of anyone that uses those words to a serious effect. I would laugh if they did, who says dork?

I haven't ever really properly been called a geek, though a few times in the last couple of years I have (but in an affectionate, friendly sort of way :)). Now, me and my friends openly know we are geeks. My friend is moreso than I am, he plays Warhammer and reads comic books, that sorta thing.
I personally only really consider myself a geek insofar that I play a lot of games and watch waaay too many films (if an actor's ever been in a James Bond film, I'll make sure everyone else who's watching knows too).

I've been called nerd a few times, mainly when the discussion comes round to Guitar Hero (relatively speaking, I am very good at it). They don't call me it after we've played though.

I was insulted once for being smart while having dyslexia.
One one-day suspension due to an indisclosed circumstance (for me) later, now no one does.

Well, people know that I'm somewhat good with computers, but they very rarely call me a nerd or a geek. Usually I beat them.:)
