After his wife's car plunged into a river, Stacy Horton had an agonising decision to make: rescue her or their teenage son.

His wife Vanessa had escaped from the car but was crying for help as she struggled to keep her head above water, while their son Silva, 13, was still trapped inside the sinking vehicle.

With time to save only one, Mr Horton dived into the river.

A 13 year old who can't swim? Were his parents crazy?!

You generally wait for the car to submerge.

Reading the story it says she chased a group of children who vandilizzed the mail box... who takes the child and friend and dog in the car with them to chase kids who just mashed a mailbox? Besides the father said "Rather than risk my own life and go after the boy." Dude, even if it wasnt my son, I would have dived 20 feet down and atleast tried. I dont mean to be stupid but if there was a friend in the car that had gotten to saftey, couldent she have helped the mom? Just saying the whole story is whack, sounds like the parents were a little screwed up, and he said the car was only 3-feet underwater, and maybe 4 feet down after it sank into the mud.

Yeah, everytime I'm slowly sinking into the river in a crashed car I'm thinking.
"Hm, it's gonna be alright, I just need to wait until the car's completely waterfilled so that the preasure equalizes. "

Hmm, however, I wonder how the mom got out of the car and the kid didn't when should would have had to go through an opening, did she close the door after her?

It's rude to leave doors open.

I'm surprised he went for his wife instead of his son, to be honest.

Humor is a way some people find comfort in stories like these. Nothing wrong with it IMO

That sounds like one of those crappy hypothetical situation you give your friends when your drunk.

... and that's why I'm happy my car doesn't have power windows. I simply roll the window down, take a deep breath, and swim up.

On a more serious note, it's sad to hear that this happened. :(

I hate this guy for not trying to get his son.

TheGuy said:
I made a call to pull my wife to safety. I looked back and I could see the tail-lights, but it was too far and I couldn't get him.

I just had to accept the fact that he had gone.

'Instead of going down and risking my life as well as my wife and son's, I chose to take Vanessa back and sat on the shore praying. It was all I could do.'

So part of the car was still not under water and he just gives up. My bad, he didn't give up, he spent his time "praying". Praying for what? Get off your ass and go after your kid.

Hand brakes? =.=

Knowing the car is rolling without a driver... the kid still stays inside? 13 years of age...

An annoyingly sad story though. Wouldn't want to be in his shoes.

As usual some sick creeps feel that it's necessary to joke about such a tragic story.

My emotions have been dulled since a third of my family tree died this and the last year.

That had to be one of the most difficult choices he had to make, my son or my wife? I feel so sorry for both of them.
