Quick noob question about detecting units

I'm making a lightning-type spell. I want a single bolt(of a fixed length) to extend out from the caster in the direction he casts. If an enemy unit is between the caster and the endpoint of the bolt, then I will do trigger stuff to that unit. It should only affect one unit(the closest one).

How can I detect that unit?

Why not base it off impale? Give it a unique buff and detect units with the unique buff, after the ability is cast. A problem could be the stun...

But if you really want to use points, then I don't know >_<.

* Create a dummy unit with the locust ability, no model, and the moving speed you want the projectile to have.

* Make one trigger called Ich_Bin_Deinen_Führer or something without events.

* Make another trigger called Ich_Bin_Leider_Von_Gutt with the spell as event.

* Find the point 500.00 units away from the caster, towards the point target of the spell. Save this location as point b or some variable like that.

* Create your dummy unit and order it to move to point b. Now add an event "A Unit comes within 100 range of (Dummy Unit)" to Ich_Bin_Deinen_Führer.

* And then, add your actions to this trigger. Also remove the dummy unit in these actions.
