I like the runes idea. I think some random events should contain random invasions that enter in from the middle area of the arena and head towards the center and split up to attack the bases, if that makes any sense.
Also, on another note, I have a hero idea you might find useful. A re-rendition of my comboist, which I've already partially implemented in a pointless map I'll probably never release (not WotU). Anyway, striking the same unit over and over increases his combo up to a point, say 5 (and it increases every level), and then, optionally, either drop back down to 0, or stay at 5 until he targets another enemy. Obviously, it's passive. Anyway, having a higher combo increases your attack speed, so your attacks become faster and more furious. However, the other three abilities rely on timing with your combos to achieve the maximum effect. The second ability would be a cross sweep that hits multiple unit around the comboist and requires, say, at least three combo hits to use. The third would be some kind of stab that strikes a unit and any units directly behind it and requires at least five combo hits. Then the ultimate would be some kind of super cool finisher move that strikes multiple units.
