A contest that involves children seeing how far they can throw dead rabbits has been banned in New Zealand following outcry from animal welfare campaigners.

The annual 'rabbit throw' in the South Island town of Waiau has been a tradition for years but officials have had to cancel the event following complaints from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

An animal cruelty inspector with the charity, Charles Cadwallader, said: "Do you throw your dead grandmother around for a joke at her funeral?"

Throwing corpses sounds sick to me, no matter if they are animals or whatever. Its right to be banned.

A dead thing is a dead thing, they dont care. This is bull crap, we dont throw around our dead mother because she at one point had a conscience, rabbits dont. Its like saying your flicking the dead fly you just smacked, would you flick your dead grandmother? Its not a viable argument, their animals, they live to reproduce, nothing more nothing less.

Regardless no one would complain if they were tossing frozen turkeys, cause turkeys arent cute. The only way that I could see this being something actually worth debating would be if they cruelly killed the rabbits, such as using chemicals or something, they prolly just order them frozen, its another "Save the dolphin from the tuna net its inhumane... WHAT ABOUT THE TUNA IN THE TUNA NET?" Drop it, their all animals, and they are all subject to be used as we see fit, whether that means our stomachs or Sea-World, one isnt superior to the other.

What Post #11 was suggesting is that the rabbits are probably hunted, so events like these encourage hunting rabbits and killing them for a silly tradition.
It's not that "Oh it's OK, they're dead already". It's that they probably died for this tradition. I understand why the Animal Cruelty people are annoyed.
...Not to mention that throwing dead rabbits doesn't sound particularly appealing. It can't be good for the children throwing the rabbits either, in terms of teaching morals.

Despite my usual opinion of "Fuck the melodramatic animal rights and green peace people", I'm actually with them on this one. More so because of the fact that children throw dead things around for fun, than the fact that the rabbits are actually being thrown around.

Saw this at school and my class laughed, ha. Yeah it's kinda cruel.
Funny, but still. Give the rabbit some respect.

BLASPHEMY? MADNESS? TRADITION? THIS... IS... NEW ZEALAND!

Indeed, what has the world succumb to when I can't throw the decaying bodies of small creatures around for sport?
Aye, god forbid that we might find a form of entertainment that doesn't involve morbid children's games ;)

"Do you throw your dead grandmother around for a joke at her funeral?"

No of corse not. Dead Grandma != Dead rabbit.

Do I care if someone thorws a dead rabbit? no. Do i think its gross, ya. If they killed the rabbit just for the event, then thats ever more messed up.

So you're saying if you could pick her up and throw her, you would?...

They made a fair point.

Probably not. I don't find enjoyment in that.

Actually, no. If I could see, I'd be like "GO GO GO GO GO!!!!"
