Heroes
Heroes belong to one of the three factions and one of [three] general class types. Instead of gaining or strengthening class-specific abilities when leveling, the character upgrades a focus; weapon, armor, cloak/clothing and ring/amulet. E.g., a level 4 character that has one point invested into each focus can use the 1st level ability of any power-granting item he uses.

Each focus can be upgraded to a maximum level of 5. With four different slots to spread skill points around, it is not possible to max out every focus. (This may be removed if the level max is increased.)

The three class types are Warrior, Ranger/Rogue and Spellcaster. Each faction has its own unique class that fills each class type and each class has its own approach to each role, which aligns with the factions’ approach to combat. (Humans are strong against bosses and other high-level creatures, Orcs tear through hordes of smaller creatures, Undead weaken enemies and control combat, Mercenaries.) Warriors are melee fighters, Ranger/Rogues use ranged combat and stealth and spell casters use magic.

Humans
Warrior- Soldier
Ranger/Rogue- Scout
Spellcaster- Mage
Orcs
Warrior- Berserker
Ranger/Rogue- Hunter
Spellcaster- Shaman
Undead
Warrior- Wight
Ranger/Rogue- Shade
Spellcaster- Lich
Mercenaries
Warrior-Knight-Errant
Ranger/Rogue- Skirmisher
Spellcaster- Warlock

Items and Abilities
Heroes do not gain their own abilities; rather they gain them by equipping items that grant them. Each item has base bonuses that any character can use; a sword still provides extra damage, a suit of mail still provides additional armor, etc.

Special items provide additional abilities to those who with points invested in the appropriate focus. The level of focus increases the potency of the ability.

Any and all ability-giving items are unique; No one gets special powers from “Iron Sword”, while the “Flesh-Rending Blade of Doom” would be a potent (and rare) weapon.

Items grant abilities related, directly or indirectly, with their type; weapons give special attacks, special damage types, increased attack speed, armor grants auras, increased movement speed, healing, etc.
