One thing that comes to mind:

Western and Asian hairs are different in the hair structures. Western hairs are a bit flat, while Asian hairs are more round. Hence, American and European hairs are mostly fluffy and bouncy, while Asian hairs are a little bit more straight and heavy.

So, what does this have to do with manga character hair designs? You realize these artists work in their full time drawing. They go to bed late and wake up early. Sometimes, they are too lazy to do the usual routines in their daily life.

Especially when it comes to forgetting to use the hair dryer (blower). Once they forget to do that, go to bed, and then wake up the next morning, what becomes of their hair was then copied/modified onto newly created characters.

For example, the hair of Spike Spiegel from the famous anime series, Cowboy Bebop.

What to do:

1. Make sure your hair is not too long and not too heavy. It needs to be durable for it to stand up on its own; being spiky without using any hair gel. In this case, Asian people have the upper hand.
2. Rinse your hair, until they are totally wet. Do this during the late hours of the day.
3. Let your hair dry naturally without using the hair blower.
4. Go lie down on the bed and your face facing up towards the ceiling. Then sleep.
5. The next morning, most of your hair should stand up. If not, it could be during your sleep, you turned your body. Or your hair isn't that tough...
6. Wait for some half an hour. Your hair should slowly be pulled down (by gravity). And then there's your Spike Spiegel hair.

Currently, I'm looking for pictures to show my point. Hope this gives food for thought.

I'm pretty sure "bed hair" and "manga hair" are related in some way.
