Questions about NUON component outputs

I recently purchased a Samsung Nuon player and was quite surprised to see that it has component outputs on it. Cool! So I hook it up, via component, to my LCD TV and played some Merlin Racing. The image was not as crisp as I was expecting it to be. It's hard to describe, but it just seemed like the colors were oversaturated or something. So I then tried playing it through s-video and it actually looked a little better.

So I have some questions. Does it sound surprising that the s-video looks better than component? Does the player have issues outputting component? Also, do I need to make some kind of adjustment on the Nuon player itself (a switch or menu) to tell it what type of signal to output, or does it just figure it out on it's own? I'm used to having to "tell" gaming systems what to output through a menu. The bottom line is that I want to play in the highest quality possible.

Edit: I originally said "composite" when I meant to say "s-video."

Did you get a remote with the player? What model is the Samsung? N501?
