RAM issues

This is weird. I've had battlefield for a few months now, and it plays all right, though it leaves something to be desired. Anyways, I decided to put another 256 ram in to improve performance, and the game wouldn't start. It just went to a black screen and crashed to the desktop. The system recognized that it had 512 ram, but it wouldn't run the game. At first i thought it might be the chips, so we tried a bunch of different combinations with the same and different chips with the same result. I went back to 256 and now it runs like it did before.

System: Intel Celeron 1000mhz
Video Card: Hercules Prophet (i have all the new drivers)
256 DDR RAM
Sound: ? (it works)

I'm thinking that there might be something i am required to do before the game can run with 512 ram.

Please help.
