This is entirely real. The Island chain Hawaii is on was formed like this. In fact, underneath the islands, undersea volcanoes continue to erupt and form new land; the island themselves are moving away from the volcanic vent as the continental plate on which they were formed is drifting away from it. The volcano Krakatoa in Indonesia is an island formed like the one in the photos above. When it blew in 1883, the island vaporised leaving behind only a few crumbling peaks around the edge of the caldera (crater). Since then, the island has grown back through smaller eruptions. It will erupt again in a manner similiar to 1883 at some point in the future, and it will surely claim many thousands of lives when it does.
