Terrain Ideas For a Scary Map?

I have this map I am making and its genre is a horror surviavl. It's a genre you might not see everyday on B.net. My map is about a few people going into a haunted town and must survive a mad killer that is on the loose. It turns out one of your friends might be the killer. Instead of guessing who it is and killin them after, You must survive a certain amount of time. The time is origonally 10 minutes, however, when the killer kills a unit, the timer increases by 1 minute. This will force the surviours to run and hide. So this means the terrain will play a big role in the game. Which comes to my question, I have made about 40% of the terrain. However, I have no more ideas on what I should do for the other 60% of the map :(. The picture of the map is below. If anyone can give me some good ideas that would be great (you get +rep if its a good idea). Also, If you need any more information (Which would be ridiculos) then say so :rolleyes:

Ideas I have done: Graveyard and Burnt-Down Village. A Forest might work, But it wouldnt be very orginized (Since I can only terrain when things are percise :p)

Well you can't make it too big or it's impossible to find anyone. Too small and the killer's going to have too easy of a time.

Try separating your major landmarks with an open field. That way it discourages survivors from running from place to place at any time. They wont want to run the risk of being seen by the killer in the field, so they'll stay in their hiding place, whether it be the graveyard or whatever yahoo you've got. The only time a survivor would leave his landmark and go for another is if he/she is certain the killer's occupied at another place.

Well I am decreasing the size of the map anyway :p

The open field sounds like a good idea... Eh wth +rep :D

Anymore ideas anyone?

Well, you can have doors that are sometimes opened and sometimes closed, which can screw up your escape :D

I suggest you make the killer a little weird, at least concerning movement. He can sometimes move really fast, he can constantly change transparency etc. For example, he can just run through you without dealing any damage, just to scare you. But I think that would be to much going in fantasy, I suppose you want more realism :p

Well, extending that door idea, you can have lots of secret passages which constantly close and open.

Black mask would be a good idea probably. Also, dimmed vision could give a cool effect (decreasing and increasing line of sight, there is an item ability that can do that).

Try putting an enterable house with many traps, and include a lot of dead-ends for the killer.

Making the camra angle almost directly behind your units and making the units movement speed really low is a good way to make a game scarier, works for silent hill and fatal frame! lol, but of course this would mean movement is really hard seeing as how it wud be hard to right click where you wanna go... then of course making the terrain as dark as possible too...

However I will probably only use Renendaru's dead end ideas since the third-person camera got a lot of complaints last time I made a map

Try a mountain area that has lots of small spots but just for interest make it dangerous to be there: i.e. a rockslide has a chance of happening and either killing you or maybe blocking your path. (Also if you want more ideas look up some of the locations used in the book Frankenstein. Some of them would work well for this I think)

If you want to, you could also try a huge field, but add loads of fog and limit the unit's range of sight. That way, they'd never see it coming.

This would add perfectly for my map :D

That would work greatly for about 20% of my map. Seeing how im at about 50% i need 30% which would be the sides of the map (Look at my picture. You see those sides coming off the village? I need to put something there. I could, however, Just add village roads that lead off to dead ends)

I see where you're going with that, try to make it seem like an abandoned town, but add the creepiest features. It'd be cool to see a house with a basement that has people in it, but on nooses.

You could also make it possible to light a fire that gives you a large radius of vision but alerts others to your position. This would allow you to have smaller sight radii on your units. Events that change terrain at random (say a forest fire or a building falling over) would be cool too. Also you probably already thought of this but you could make the gametime start at the beginning of the night and the timer end at sunrise.

The problem is, I would have to make a space in the map that cannot be reached. This might make my map look a little messy :/ Still a good idea if I can find some models with peasents in nooses :p

Ya I already though of that :p But the fire idea is good since players cant communicate or see where the others are :D

There's a good model of a peasant impaled from a hanging chain, it's somewhere on Hive I think.

  • At the center of the map, make a large 1-storey town hall with rooms inside for the players to hide. It's a mess inside, and there are a few exits rather than just the main entrance. There are few rooms for which players hide, and there is the main path which separates these rooms, like a dormitory. All in all the town hall is similar to a small mansion.
  • Don't forget to add some things like decayed corpses (fleshy corpses; just play a dummy unit's death animation and change its tint to a somewhat pale color to give it that 'dead' feel)
  • The real killer would often say that he sees something "Hey, I saw something!". Most of the time he comes back, but when he doesn't, that's the tables turning against you I suppose:p
  • Add some hidden pitfalls and manholes covered in hay, around random points in the town. When you fall, you get stunned and take minor damage by the fall and injuries, but you can still get up after being stunned. This gives the killer (if he's on the loose) an opportunity to strike, or the killer himself gets tangled:p.
  • Don't forget to make a garden in the map. The garden's plants look wilted and dark, the whole scenery just looks dead. The open grassy garden is surrounded by a dozen pine trees (any tree actually).
  • Put some more "darker" looking buildings in the town, preferably the Dalaran ruins doodads, and change their tint to make them look dark and creepy.

I'm not a fan of horror maps; these are my last 50 cents:D.

The bolded one is perfect for the left side. Iam at 85% now. I need one more thing. Anyone have one last scary thing? The darker house this is also a good idea. Thank you! +rep

And with that, also at the dead-ends random escapes for the player, such as hitting a secret lever disguised as a book! :eek: But each place would have to have different, random ones each game so they don't repeat.

You need the classic graveyard, :)
Also a path. Maybe several connecting to each other. Just long, winding roads. Having nothing but darkness and fog around you on a seemingly endless road is scary I think.

And this: an orchard. Just rows and columns of like apple trees or anything. Lots of fog around, scarecrows. Like:

Where the X's are trees or plants or whatever you want in the orchard.
