Advise on best Social Networking Framework

Has anybody created their own Social Networking Website like facebook? I would like to ask what framework you use? My friend introduced me to PHPfox. It looks cool, but not free

I searched for others, but since Im new to this, I have no idea which is the best. So I came here to ask for experienced opinions.
