Study finds ‘direct evidence’ of polar amplification on continent as scientists warn of implications of ice loss

Antarctica is likely warming at almost twice the rate of the rest of the world and faster than climate change models are predicting, with potentially far-reaching implications for global sea level rise, according to a scientific study.

Scientists analysed 78 Antarctic ice cores to recreate temperatures going back 1,000 years and found the warming across the continent was outside what could be expected from natural swings.

In West Antarctica, a region considered particularly vulnerable to warming with an ice sheet that could push up global sea levels by several metres if it collapsed, the study found warming at twice the rate suggested by climate models.

Climate scientists have long expected that polar regions would warm faster than the rest of the planet – a phenomenon known as polar amplification – and this has been seen in the Arctic.

Note to people who live at sea level next to an ocean. Don't sit around and expect technology to stop sea level rise as it will not be able too. Do not wait around for climate models to tell you to move because they will not be accurate. Sea levels are going to rise no matter what we do so if you live close to the ocean and are at sea level freaking MOVE! There is plenty of space out there that is not going to be flooded - go find it.

I'm not too worried about sea level rise. But hurricanes, flash floods, and dry spells will come for us all, no matter how far away from the sea we live.

And of course there may be huge amounts of people trying to move to more moderate climates because their crops don't grow anymore. Lots of potential cultural clash headed our way, the less we do against global warming the worse it will be.

We have tons of room in the US in the central part of the country for anybody who is displaced. Problem is that most of the US population density is located on the coasts anyway :) We still have plenty of room :)

Ohhh, I just came back from the airport. I'm so sorry. I was completely off grid since I left to Taiwan.
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
Here's what happened. The earthquake happened while I was high above Hawaii.
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
After landing, I got news that a big earthquake struck. Since I'm only there in Taiwan for a week, I figured the best option I have is to make sure my family is safe, and that we are all good to go from there.
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
I didn't get any phone service plans because I am mainly visiting my family and staying indoors. Well, the earthquake made me forgot to go get phone service.
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
And then a few days later, just north from my family, there was a giant plastic industrial complex that caught on fire, with the blaze burning for 1.5 days.
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
There was some air pollution and smog outside.
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
We did our Ching Ming Festival indoors with my father's family side, and occassionally traveling down southward to visit some farmlands, and paying a visit to my grandmother and my uncle on my mother's side.
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
The whole trip was quite hectic, with occasional afterquakes throughout the week. This whole time, I completely forgot about giving updates on TH. :p Again, sorry for the lack of communications.

As for Github, I often frequent there, boasting about my genetic algorithm for tools-assisted speedrunning and such. I'm also pretty active on Discord, with my tag @asperatology.
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
Yeah, the whole earthquake + air pollution combo made me completely forget about bringing updates. I'll be sure to keep on top of things after all things are less requiring my attentions.

I am just glad that you are OK Tom! Thank you for the update!
  • Varine Varine:
Glad to hear you're okay! I only knew about your Github cuz I tried to follow some of you when I was learning how to program, but didn't understand any of it so kind of quit paying attention to what anyone does on it
