I found a good way to disable the 10 min "You must restart!" remainder, without the other annoying "Automatic Update is turned off, click this balloon..." problem:

1. Go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools.
2. Click on Services.
3. Right click on "Automatic Updates" and select Properties.
4. Now STOP the service, but do not disable it, leave it to manual or automatic.
5. Go to the Log on tab on the top.
6. Look at the bottom of the window, there should be a box called "Hardware Profile". Select "Profile 1" and double click to disable it.
7. Apply and Exit. Now Automatic Update will attempt to start up every 10 min. But without a Hardware Profile, it cannot.

That's a backwards way of accomplishing what you want.

Go to Security Center control panel and "Change the way security center notifies me" - you can tell it not to show you the warnings when you disable auto-install of Automatic Updates. (You can just set Automatic Updates to download, but not install updates for you.)

(For XP SP2)

I mean the 10 min Restarting Part. Either you disable Auto Update and the big red shield of annoyance popsup, or takes the 10 min and pop up.
