I want to create an image for backup purposes of an SSD with Windows 7 installed. My current plan for creating backups is to use a ubuntu live cd and the ntfsclone tool using the --save-image option, then using something like gzip to compress the image and store it away on another machine. For restoring backups, I'll uncompress the image, use ntfsclone to restore the image overwriting all data on the SSD. If there are boot errors, I'll use a windows 7 installation cd to repair them.
My questions are:
- does ntfsclone work on SSDs?
- will this significantly impact on the life expentancy of the SSD?
- does ntfsclone --restore-image overwrite all existing data on the SSD?
