It must be a very confusing sight for a learner astronaut. Amazing pictures of the shuttle Atlantis cockpit reveal just how complicated it is to fly into space, with astronauts confronted by a huge array of buttons and screens. The shuttle program ended in July, though, so the buttons have been pushed for the last time. Now Atlantis is going on display at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, from the end of 2012. Sadly, visitors won’t be allowed to climb into the cockpit.

To make room for Atlantis an exact-size model of the craft called Explorer was moved after nearly two decades on display at the Florida complex. It was wheeled to the Launch Complex 39 basin, about four miles away. The move will make room for a new $100million Atlantis exhibit, whose 33 missions included the 135th and last by a shuttle in the summer.
