Hey, I was told that VLC could make movies your wallpaper, and I found a tutorial or two on how to do it. I followed it exactly but my wallpaper just went black, what's wrong?

Also if anyone knows a better way to do it I'd love to know and I've already tried DeskScapes.

The movie in question is about 7-9 mins long from youtube and im running Windows 7.

Thanks in advance!

link to the VLC tutorial? maybe you missed something.

EDIT:

Got it to work on my laptop. (Windows 7)

Tools > Preferences > Video

Under Display, be sure Accelerated video output (Overlay) is enabled.
Display>Output dropdown menu, select DirectX video output (dont use Default).

Now, go to DirectX on the same dialog box and enable Enable wallpaper mode.

Works fine for the .flv file i have. No lag at least for me (ATI Mobility Radeon 5145, 1GB).
Messes up the aero and your desktop icons though.

I did most of that, I don't think I did the accelerated video output thing though. I'm trying it now. :)

OK, first off my windows color sceheme resorts to normal as soon as I open the movie in VLC, the movie is in .mp4 format. The accelerated thing is selected, I'll try converting it and then see what I get.

OK, I converted it with this program from MP4 to FLV and the same thing (nothing new). Once I close VLC though my windows color scheme is back to normal. Hope this helps.

under windows xp you could create a html file playing an avi video and set that as desktop background
don't know if it still works under windows 7 but I found a site explaining it
http://www.activewin.com/tips/desk_tips_8.shtml
making the html website yourself (if you know html) will be more likely to work
edit:
support for active desktop seems to be gone since vista but got replaced by sidebar widgets
maybe one of these widgets is a video player

OK, I'm trying the tutorial now but I can't seem to find a good place to DL Internet Assistance. Also I don't use widgets.

You should try DreamScene.

It's been discontinued in Windows 7 but you can still activate it.

It was a nice feature in Vista.

I did, but had trouble either finding a version or in the tutorial somewhere, I can't remember where. But that is where I went first and got the idea.
