Need advice for a new rig

So I posted on here a while ago about computer parts and got a few lists that seemed alright, but I never got the chance to buy the parts. That was 9 months ago, so I figured things would probably be different now; that's why I'm making a new thread.

Anyhow, budget's about 750-1k USD and I want something that can run new games smoothly on relatively high graphics settings. I'll probably also use it for some casual graphics and music shit, but mostly for gaming. I shouldn't really need much more than 150-200 gigs on the HD.

Since I'm a total newbie when it comes to building a computer (never done it before), I really need things spelled out for me

you need(or probably want new):
a cpu
a motherboard
some memory
a hard drive
a PSU(power supply unit)
a case
a graphics card (to play games)

you probably want (or don't need to buy and can just salvage from an old computer):
a cd/dvd drive
a monitor
a mouse
a keyboard
speakers?
an operating system (windows 7? linux?)

the motherboard is probably what component you should pick first, because the CPU/memory selection depends on the motherboard
