Primary and Extended partitions

When I first messed with partitions, a couple of years ago, I was told that a HDD can only have one primary and one extended partition divided into several logical drives. That made sense so I always afterwards partitioned my Hard Drivers so that there would be two partitions, one primary and one logical drive inside an extended. Never had the time nor will to try something else.
However recently I repartitioned and, according to Disk Manager, (accidentally) made two primary partitions. No big deal, didn't even notice it by now, but it made me wonder...
What is the difference between a logical drive and a primary partition? Is there an actual reason why it's better to have an extended partition instead of several primary?
Yeah, I googled before asking, but I either found some outdated information (concerning DOS) or very long explanations that didn't really explain what I want to know.
