At least five families of U.S. military members killed during in Afghanistan over the weekend were given a double-whammy by federal officials: Not only have your loved ones died, but due to the government shutdown, you won’t receive a death benefit.

The benefit is $100,000 and is wired to family members of the killed military member within 36 hours of the death. The so-called “death gratuity” is aimed at paying for funeral costs and to help with those living expenses normally covered by the soldier’s paycheck.

They serve as a transition pay benefit until the military’s survivor benefits begin. The $100,000 also helps military families fly to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, while the coffins carrying their loved ones are being unloaded

Disgusting! Seriously, they should all be ashamed.

What can you do? The only people you can really blame on are the politicians for not preventing such shutdowns.

If you do a job where you're supposed to get paid at the end, not having money is definitely not a good excuse. That's something they needed to take care of before they did the recruiting.

They still cant pull the money out of their asses. If they dont have the money, they cant give it away. Simple as that. You dont like it? Start a revolution.

I hear you, but that doesn't make it a good excuse. Makes it a really shitty one.

That depends. For the people who are working there its a good excuse. Its not their fault that there is no money. Maybe they would like to give money to the people but they really cant.

If they can't get to the money because of this government shutdown, that's a good enough excuse for them even if it doesn't help anyone. If they don't have the money anywhere for these people even though it was promised to them, it's definitely a shitty excuse.

Does it matter if they have a good or bad excuse? It's still an excuse and they still aren't going to get it. And really, in comparison to the other issues that are currently facing the US, this is pretty trivial.

If it's according to a contract of some sorts, which abides by the laws and such, it's very reasonable to side with FireCat, and demand the consolation money.

Otherwise, it would sound like blood money.

It is blood money. As to whether or not it's in a contract I have no idea, but they are at the bottom of the list of shit that needs to be fixed. Besides, they'll get paid when the government re-opens, as was pretty clear when they shut down. The DoD made some kind of a deal with a non-profit charity to handle it already anyway.

No, probably by the end of the week. And how is it not blood money? If my employer gave my family a hundred grand after I was killed attempting to murder a rival of his, would that be worse or better?
