unit skill =cannot increase range

when i use hero abilities and change the research upgrade (like long bows) to hero ability it works quite well...
but when i change the ability to unit type...it doesn't work

yeah...
if its a unit skill it doesn't work...
but if i change it to hero skill it works...
what do u mean by "change the ability to unit type?"...
