Units level up?

I've seen a couple of maps where units are basically heroes without spells, attributes and death notice and can be revived on the battlefield and not in taverns. How is that possible?

Do the units have a exp bar like heroes? If yes, they are probably simply heroes with no abilities that are revived through a trigger. Hope I helped.
Edit: uh, I read your post and just noticed you said no attributes, so idk.
Edit: what is the name of the map?
Other edit: Whoever made the map could have made a exp variable and make it go up when a nearby enemy unit dies. At a certain amount of "exp", the unit would change into a different unit with a higher level.

Ummm for the death notice you can remove it in gameplay constants/interface, I forgot which.
As for attributes, Idk...
They're probably heroes, but how to remove attributes? I don't know.
