"Today, we are announcing the Alpha release of the Dota 2 Workshop Tools. This is the first release of a new set of tools to create, play, and share custom maps and game modes for Dota 2. This is a developer focused release and currently has high system requirements which means not everyone will be able to run the tools. At the moment the tools require a 64-bit version of Windows and a Direct3D 11 compatible GPU. We are working on expanding the number of PC configurations (including 32-bit OSes like Windows XP) that will be able to run this but wanted to get the tools out there so developers could start working on their Custom Games."

It also comes with a wiki.

So, what do you guys think? Is it time to make good ol' wc3 maps?

There's already been some intense modding for DotA 2 BEFORE this tool came out. People have re-created pudge wars, hero line wars, warlocks ... I can only hope that with this tool out a ton more games resurface! I miss the days of being able to join an Uther Party game real quick :)

Wc3 was awesome.
One of the most important aspect was the low quality and high quantity of games. It was completely random what you will get.
You might get a shitty game full of crap, or a rare gem, hidden inside a puddle of puke. Every minute it was a gamble, and the experience was also affected by the other players who joined.
It was almost like some kind of weird social experiment where they toss a bunch of teenagers into a small room and force them to operate some bizarre device without any kind of information or warm up.
Just try and see what is going to happen.

I feel with you on some levels. I remember how maddening it could be when you play a shitty map & it felt like you were wasting your time ... but other times yeah, I agree, when you found a hidden gem it was great. The rating system in starcraft 2 makes finding such gems hard anymore :( and surely some sort of rating system will be in place with DotA 2. Sad, really ... gone are the days when solo mapmakers can come out swinging with a well-made map & have it flourish into popularity without having to REALLY advertise it.

I opened it a bit, I am still mostly confused with it but it seems pretty nice.

Some dude on reddit suggested that you should be able to filter lobbies by date created. Which means, like warcraft 3. Which means, no need for advertising, you just get into what pops. I'd be in favor of that.

The only problem is that the Editor is very taxing to the Computer. You need a very strong computer just to open it.

edit: concerning the D2modd.in mods, they're nice, but they have been made with a very sloppy editor, which wasn't official and yeah, it wasn't very efficient. With the new editor out, you can make much better maps, with better support and well, better everything. :p

I definitely want to give it a go. :) I haven't played DotA 2 myself, but I've heard good things about the editor. It should be fun.

I'm really looking forward to this. I hope it's as easy as the editor in WC3. Time to make those fancy Tower Defense games!. If someone makes a LoL port in Dota2, that would be the most hilarious thing lol!

It's already in the works. On the DotA 2 subreddit last week, one of the top rated threads was a livestream of a guy working on just this.

I'm toying with it right now and it seems quite complicated to do even basic things we could do with the wc3 editor. Simply put, object editor is quite literally, an object editor, as in the direct objects that are on the map. Abilities, buffs, items, units... they have to be modified outside of the editor, they are on separate .txt files.

Same for triggers. They have to be referenced from outside the editor.
