Only when your link target is an image and not a script generating an image, scripts that are cloaked as an image do work too.

Example:
[noparse]www.mysite.net/images/cool.jpg[/noparse] // works
[noparse]www.mysite.net/image.php?cool.jpg[/noparse] // does not work
[noparse]www.mysite.net/?image=cool.jpg[/noparse] // does not work
