Introduction
Evangelion primarily begins in 2000 with the "Second Impact", a global cataclysm which almost completely destroyed Antarctica and led to the deaths of half the human population of Earth. The Impact is believed by the public at large and even most of NERV to have been the impact of a meteorite traveling at nearly the speed of light landing in Antarctica, causing events that would lead to almost wiping out the human race.Later, of Course; Military researchers and organizations found a disturbing truth. The Second Impact was revealed to be the result of contact with and experimentation on the first of what are collectively called by researchers Angels. The angel that caused the nearly devastated of man kind to be known as Adam by the bible, known as the first man ever created by God.
In the year 2010 A.D., A paramilitary organization was setup out of many other military organizations; called NERV, headquartered in Tokyo-3, a militarized civilian city located on one of the last dry sections of Japan. Which Central mission was to destroy the last remaining angels, predicted to finish off man kind by the military council known as SELEE (Soul in German). To Destroy these angels. Man kind has created the greatest weapon that man kind has ever built. Evas or the Eva Series. Giant biological robots met to destroy the angels, and is mans last chance to survive.
The pilots of these weapons are choosen to be after the "Second Impact" mean they would have to be fourteen years old.
Yet in the Year 2015, Not knowing why his father summoned him, Shinji Ikari, a 14 year old boy who chronically suffers from anxiety, depression, lack of self confidence and loneliness, arrives to Tokyo-3 just as the Third Angel attacks the city. Shinji reluctantly agrees to join NERV to pilot Evangelion Unit 01, and begins living with Captain (later Major) Misato Katsuragi. He and Rei Ayanami battle the successive advances of the Angels together and are later joined by Asuka Langley Soryu, the pilot of Unit 02.

Eva Units
Introduction
Although they appear to be giant humanoid robots, the Evas are actually cybernetic, integrating a mostly biological being with a substantial mechanical infrastructure and flexible polymer sheeting and armor plating. This armor is almost impenetrable to conventional weaponry, but has varying levels of effectiveness against Angel attacks.
Abilities of Eva Units
Despite their enormous size, they are capable of superhuman movement, able to easily leap their own height and jump hundreds of meters from one spot to another. To power their massive frames through these actions, they use internal batteries, an umbilical cable, or (later in the series) an S² engine (for
Unit 01 and the Mass Production units).
Power Supply
Officially, their internal batteries' charge varies: one minute of power at full output, five minutes at minimum operational capability, and sixteen hours if only used to maintain life support in the entry plug. However, there seems to be no discernible difference between "full use" mode and "minimal operation" mode
Pre Eva Unit
Several dozen prototype Eva models were made, all of which were deemed failures. These can be seen in the Evangelion graveyard, hidden in one of the lowest levels of the NERV headquarters. They all have orange armor. At least the first Evangelion prototype had five eyes. Most of these failed Evas' organic structures have rotted away, leaving little more than an armoured head connected to a backbone, often with an incomplete number of limbs. They have the word "reject" painted on their heads in large red letters.
Eva Unit 00 (Zerogōki: 零号機)
Pilot: Rei Ayanami
Rank: Prototype
Color: Yellow then Blue
Unit 00 is the Prototype, the first successful attempt at creating an Eva Unit, and is piloted by the First Child, Rei Ayanami. The head design is similar to that of the previous failed attempts, but with only one eye. There are also two domes on the top of the head; their function (if any) is not revealed.Unit 00 was initially colored orange like the previous prototypes, but its armor was damaged beyond repair by the Angel Ramiel's particle beam. The subsequent repairs and upgrades included blue armor plating in addition to other alterations made in order to make it more suitable for combat conditions (it retains parts of the orange armor in the manga). The upgrades to Unit 00's armor make it look more like the subsequent Evas, but there are still several differences or actual limitations.
Eva Unit 01 (Shogōki: 初号機)
Rank: Prototype
Color: Purple
Created in the Third Annex of GEHIRN's Artificial Evolution Laboratory in Hakone from 2003 to 2004 and deemed a functional Eva unit in 2014, Unit 01 is piloted by Shinji Ikari and has the best battle record of all the Evangelions. It has been known to act independently (in the so-called "berserker" mode) without the instructions of a pilot and sometimes without any apparent power source. EVA Unit 01 has the domient soul of Yui Ikari (Shinji's Mother) as well as the soul of Lilith.
Eva Unit 02 (Nigōki: 弐号機)
Pilot: Asuka Langley Soryu
2nd Pilot: Kaworu Nagisa
Rank: Production Model
Color: Red
Evangelion Unit 02, built by NERV Germany, is the first Production Model Eva. It is piloted by Asuka Langley Soryu and is the first Evangelion built specifically for combat. Combining the efficient construction of Unit 01 with an arsenal of concealed weaponry, Unit 02 is a walking tank designed to counter the threat posed by the Angels. It can be considered the most stable Evangelion as it only goes truly "berserk" once, just before its destruction. It has achieved an unusually high sync ratio with its pilot(s)
Evangelion Unit 03 (Sangōki: 参号機)
Pilot: Toji Suzuhara
Rank: Production Model
Color: Black
(Only in in One episode)
Built in the United States by NERV Second Branch in Massachusetts, USA, Evangelion Unit 03 is one of two Units built with the Second Production Model design. It is the sister Unit of Unit 04. The United States government insisted on having the rights to build Unit 03 and Unit 04. A few minor changes were made between the first and second Production Models. Unit 03's color was unique, with much darker plates than any other Eva. The head was oddly shaped, too, with a rounded top and exaggerated chin. The pilot assigned to it was Toji Suzuhara, but in transit to Japan, it was possessed by the thirteenth Angel, Bardiel, which appeared as a cloud. As Bardiel, it was savagely torn apart by Unit 01, after the control of Unit 01 was switched from Shinji to the Dummy Plug system. Toji, the pilot, is severely injured in the anime, but in the manga he actually dies.
Evangelion Unit 04 (Yongōki: 四号機)
Pilot: None
Rank: Production Model
Color: Unknown
(Never appeared in the Show)
While Evangelion Unit 04 never actually appears in the series, it still serves a function in the story. Unit 04 was constructed at the Second Branch of NERV in Nevada, USA, acting primarily as a test subject for S² Engine (provided by the Third Branch of Germany) experimentation. Unit 04 was destroyed along with the entire Second Branch and all facilities within an 89 km radius. The cause of the accident remains unknown.
Mass Production (MP) Evangelions (Units 05 - 13)
Pilot: Dummy Plug Systems
Ranks: Mass Production Models
Color: White
These Evas appear in The End of Evangelion and were produced at seven different NERV branches around the world, probably Germany (Third Branch), the United States (First Branch, Massachusetts), Japan (Matsushiro), the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China. Units 05 and 06 were made in Germany; 08 was produced in China. SEELE had them produced as part of their backup plan for initiating Instrumentality, but only nine out of an envisioned twelve were completed. They are controlled directly by SEELE via Dummy Plugs based on Kaworu Nagisa.
Their physical build is different from previous Evas, being narrower in the chest and shoulders and wider in the hips, but the greatest difference is in the head: rather than humanoid, it is streamlined and vaguely cetacean in appearance, and apparently covered by the same reinforced plastic that coats the arms. The long jaws have red muscular lips, metal-plated teeth, a large grey tongue, and produce large quantities of saliva. There are no apparent eyes. But when 1st used in battle had giant angel wings and can attack like a hunting bird.
Other Equipment and Technology
The UN Special Agency NERV (German: nerve) is an organization led by Gendo Ikari and tasked with defending Earth against the Angels through use of the Evangelion units. It was formerly known as GEHIRN, a UN Research Agency. It was reorganized into NERV once NERV HQ and Tokyo-3 became fully operational. There are several global branches of NERV besides the main headquarters under Tokyo-3 itself.
The NERV Logo is half a fig leaf covering its name, with the motto "God's In His Heaven... All's Right With The World" forming the quarter circle on the bottom. The motto comes from Robert Browning's poem "Pippa Passes."
In Genesis 3:7, Adam and Eve cover their "nakedness" with fig leaves. The fig leaf has covered nakedness in art and sculpture for hundreds of years, symbolically representing the guilt of original sin.
Although NERV is consistently spelled using all-capital letters, it is apparently not an acronym.
In the upcoming movies Rebuild of Evangelion NERV will have a new symbol, an apple turned upside-down, with the fig-leaf from the old logo superimposed and interrupted by a wave of motion around the apple in a broken, downwards spiral motion.

SELEE
SEELE (German: soul, pronounced [ˈ zeːlə]) are NERV and GEHIRN's secret backers, who wish to implement the Human Instrumentality Project, and arguably the "true villains" of the series. It consists of at least twelve prominent people; five of them form the Instrumentality Committee, which directly oversees NERV's progress, officially in the name of the UN. Its members are referred to as the "Old Men."
SEELE is a secret organization, the real puppetmasters behind the United Nations. Its origins are shrouded in mystery; they would claim to have existed since ancient times, functioning as an Illuminati-like power cabal over most of the world's governments. This cannot be verified, but they have been operating since at least soon after World War II, when they acquired the secret sections of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The secret Dead Sea Scrolls predicted the arrival of the Angels and of Third Impact, and SEELE began striving to develop means to defeat the Angels so that a human-centered Instrumentality process would proceed. Having decided that humanity as a whole had reached an evolutionary dead end, SEELE seeks to bring about Instrumentality and unite all humans into one hyper-being, the next stage of existence.
United Nations
The United Nations is the world government which funds NERV. The U.N. of Neon Genesis Evangelion is very powerful, but this is explained by the fact that all countries in the world have joined it. The United Nations is no longer an organization of peace. Due to the Second Impact followed by series of warfare, the U.N. was pressured to make internal reform in hope of preventing more conflicts. To maintain the world's order and security, the U.N. was heavily funded by superpowers (such as the United States and China) and other powerful organizations (like SEELE) that enabled it to mobilize an extremely powerful military. It is possible that the superpowers feared one another and required a "neutral guard" to maintain the world's peace while keeping up with their own balance of power.
