i suggest you learn how to create alternate units within the same model - like the human tower that has several alternate animations. you could keep the filesize much lower i think... at least you could easily handle the "only different clothing" thing that way..

Any current tutorials on it? If there is, I would gladly read it.

hm... im not experienced with modeling - i guess you should search for an animation or general modeling tutorial...

maybe someone more skilled can answer this.
