Sydney turns red: dust storm blankets city

Sydneysiders have woken to a red haze unlike anything seen before by residents or weather experts, as the sun struggles to pierce a thick blanket of dust cloaking the city this morning.

Callers flooded talkback radio, others hit social networking sites and scores of emails were received from smh.com.au readers as Sydney residents expressed their amazement at this morning's conditions.

"It's just red, red, red as far as you can see," one caller at the Anzac Bridge told 2GB.

Woke up in bed this morning and saw the entire sky red/orange, and dozed back to sleep. Thought I was dreaming the end of the world or some shit (been watching too much Supernatural), can't beleive I didn't take a photo.

Same, except I'm all the way up in QLD and it's pretty much red.
This thing spreads quite a far distance... but it won't be happening again anytime soon haha.

Wow, and I thought it was really orange where I live. Looks even more red/orange there!

I got the aftermath of it, just a nice orange haze around the school as I was leaving.
What was more freaky was the lighting the night before. There was only 1 bolt, but it lit up my pitch black room.

Not sure when it started, the sky was still all red at around 7 in the morning, blue sky started to become visible at about noon (yesterday). Apparently we're expecting more of these dust storms.
