Well, I guess I had a busy year this past year, since I don't believe I've seen any one of the films nominated for best picture. George Clooney got two big ones, ha.

Anyone see any of the films that won/were nominated?

The only one of those that won I saw was Hugo. Scorsese deserved that award, that was a brilliant film. Considering that most people seem to believe it's a kid's film, the story was definitely one that would appeal more to adults, and one that I enjoyed more than many other films last year.

The only other one I saw from any of the nominated ones was The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I went in with pretty negative expectations to be perfectly honest, but I did enjoy the intricately woven narrative and deeper character development, even if some scenes were just a little too disturbing to be watching in the company of rather innocently minded girls :p

Hugo deserves it's own thread but for the time being, this will do I suppose.

Found this really interesting article on the making of the VFX of Hugo, and it is crazy.
Some quotes I pulled from it:

"But it also took a lot of processing power — one fantastic scene alone would have taken 19.5 years to render if just a single computer had been used."

"Because rendering just one version of one shot of the film — the swooping view into the train station, shown at the beginning of the above clip that showcases Pixomondo’s work on Hugo — took 171,015 hours of processing time. To get it done in time for the film’s November release, they broke down each shot into jobs for 1,000 computers in five different offices."

Video and full article here.

Pretty awesome, CGI is quite impressive these days. Can't wait for it to come out on DVD.
