Is it really necessary to have one? Well the point was to celebrate Jesus' birth, not who has the biggest tree, even if it is a man instinct
I'm personally atheist, but I still love having a tree to symbolize family and caring. I don't get many gifts, because I don't ask for more than one or two small things, it's all about the meaning of the time of year and family for me.
That, and it looks and smells great. It's all about the simple things in life, and as long as it symbolizes something for you/your family, it's worth it.
My opinion, of course.
