Style Type: Map control, considered as “standard” in ZvT
Skill Level: Hard
Style Pros: Map Control, forces your opponent to get certain unit types.
Style countered by: Air Dominance builds.
Most powerful in: Late Game
Match up: ZvT
Basic thought process and Tips:
This build uses Mutalisk mobility to gain map control, alongside Zerglings and Banelings, to weaken the Terran’s army, so that the Mutalisks can finish it. Your Banelings are supposed to kill the bio army, the Zerglings and Mutalisks the rest.
• This is a map control build, since your units are extremely mobile.
• That being said, do your best to deny expos and scouting.
• Your Mutalisks will have a window of opportunity where they can do some economical damage, use it as best as you can.
• After your opponent gets static defence it is pretty much over (the economical harass part).
• Try to snipe add-ons, Supply depots, anything you can, to force the Terran to invest more into defence.
• Your micro is vital for this build - you need Banelings to kill the Marines, Zerglings to absorb the initial tank shots (so that the Banelings can kill the Marines) and Mutalisks to clean up the Siege Tanks.
• In the course of a slow push, you want to constantly fly over the Terran and try to snipe a Tank, 2-3 Marines, reinforcements or just pressure him, therefore delaying his push and giving you more time to prepare for it.
• DO NOT EVER WASTE YOUR BANELINGS ON TANKS, EVER.
• Since Mutalisks are terrible against Marines, you want your Zerglings and Banelings to be attacking the Marines.
• A possible variation of this style is Ling-Muta-Infestor, where the Infestor’s Fungal Growth is used to kill the Marines.
• This style is safe from any air aggression, if you maintain map control (which isn’t hard).
• This is your endgame unit composition. You shouldn’t tech to broodlords or ultralisks.
Final words: This style of play is very good, but you must learn the proper micro for it. Else it is quite possible that the Terran army will just tear through you. If you micro properly though, it is quite possible that you will tear through him.
Good openings for this style:
14gas 14 pool
Build gets prepared from:
Baneling bust
2 base Mutalisk rush
