Hero Abilities - Do they still need a full set of effects for each level?

To create a hero ability which can be leveled (lets say 3 times) do I still need 3 sets of effects for the ability to make it work?

I got an old map that I'm planning on taking up again when I'm done with my Gridlock TD, and in that map I need (Atleast) 10 levels for each ability, but is there an easier way to do this?
(The thing is that some of the spells are more complex - 10 effects for just the normal ability, and then being able to level it 10 times would require 100 effects:eek:)

I was thinking that if the damage was the only thing changing for every level, I could deal the damage with triggers, and adjust it for the additional levels in there. Would this be possible?

EDIT:
I found out that I can modify the effects with an upgrade, so in my case, each player only controls 1 hero and will therefore not be affected bythe global upgrade that it would apply.

I will only need to apply an upgrade with a trigger each time an ability is upgraded. This would require an upgrade for each ability, but compared to having 100 effects for one ability, it's preferable ;)

(This can also be done entirely with a trigger though, but as far as I know, this needs galaxy script.)
(please let me know if you know of any way to do this with a GUI trigger though ;) )
