Making .mdx of .blp

I pretty much need a way of making models that are 2D icons.
If you need more information, it is for creating a custom UI with trackables.

I might be able to help you.

I write down steps:

1. Open Gmax model editor,
2. Create plane with 64x64.
3. Texture it with 64x64 bmp.
4. Export with latest NeoDex (edited by BlinkBoy) Gmax script.
5. Edit newly exported *.mdl file with Notepad
6. Change texture path to your preferred icon path.
7. Save as (convert*) *.mdx and import to World Editor.

Repeat steps 6 and 7 how much you need.

*You can convert with MDLX Converter (wc3c.net).

I once thought to do same thing. I stopped because I had no experience with modeling. Especially I wanted to use billboard effect on plane model. Billboard will be always facing directly to viewer (Blademaster neckless balls effect).

I don't know how to animate but few mdx models with icon animations would be better (saves map size) and is quicker to change with animations commands in graphical user interface (GUI).

EDIT:

Did basic model,by Gmax unts it is 64x64. Just import this model into your map and use as unit (or doodad) model. Unit should be facing 90 degrees (north) to see image. This model shows up from only one side, it is intentional to reduce computing power.

To change model texture, open *.mdl version, then change:

part:

ReplaceableTextures\CommandButtons\BTNDragonHawk.blp

with your desired texture path. To seek texture paths use some *.mpq editing program (for example Warcraft 3 Viewer). Such programs you can get from wc3c.net resources section > Tools.

I attach test map (order units around to see texture, they are there but invisible because of 270 facing degrees) and *.mdl, *.mdx version of model.

For start it should be enough.
