LIMA, Ohio (AP) — A white police officer accused of fatally shooting a black woman as she held her 1-year-old son during a drug raid was charged with two misdemeanors Monday, outraging activists and relatives of the woman who said he should face tougher penalties.

Sgt. Joseph Chavalia was charged with negligent homicide in the death of Tarika Wilson, 26, who was killed in a January SWAT raid at her house while looking for her boyfriend. He was charged with negligent assault in the wounding of her son Sincere Wilson, whose finger had to be amputated.

Chavalia pleaded not guilty Monday to both counts. If convicted of both he would face a maximum of eight months in jail.

Chavalia was released on a $50,000 bond. His attorney, Bill Kluge, declined to comment after the hearing.

I'm sure this article will do nothing but help racial relations, CERTAINLY.

the son wasn't killed by the way, the thread topic says he was. He lost a finger though.

After the arraignment, police Chief Greg Garlock said Chavalia remains suspended with pay and there is continued sadness over Wilson's death.

"It's a sad day for us that one of our officers was indicted," Garlock said.

Am I understanding this right? And is this printed right? Unbelievable, the police chief feels sorry for someone that killed and innocent woman? :banghead:

Actually, I Don't think you're understanding it right :p
IF you find out a member of your family has just murdered someone, you're going to be having a sad day and so are the rest of the family. It's not that you feel sorry for him, but more of an ashamed feeling. Although that officer isn't technically family, it still must be shameful to see something like that happen

Or at least, thats what I think it is

...In any case, he seriouslyn eeds a bigger punishment then that :banghead:

"It's a sad day for us that one of our officers was indicted,"

The way it's worded, I can see more people taking it the way I did. It's as though they're sad that he's being punished, indicted.

If that officer is being suspended with pay, then it seems more like he is being rewarded, as opposed to being punished. That's basically a free, paid vacation.
